Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLSU) is an anionic surfactant, also known as sodium lauryl sulfate, with the chemical formula C12H25SO4Na and a molecular weight of 288.38. It is typically a white or pale yellow powder with a slight odor and a lubricating feel. Its melting point is 185–190℃, and its density is 1.11 g/cm³. It is readily soluble in water to form a transparent solution, slightly soluble in alcohol, and insoluble in chloroform and ether. It is flammable when exposed to open flames or high temperatures, and decomposes upon heating, releasing hydrocarbons and sulfur dioxide gases. It reacts with cationic surfactants, lead salts, and potassium salts to form precipitates. In aqueous solution, it hydrolyzes to form alcohol and sodium bisulfate.
